Teacher's Day!

Teacher's Day was last week, and boy, some of the students really go out of their way. (I guess it's actually the parents I should give credit to). My kindy class was a gold mine. I got $100 from one student (what??!), a $200 watch from another student, Bobbi Brown makeup from another, a bottle of wine and cheese from one, and assorted bath products from several other kids. It's not unusual to get such elaborate things. Many of my colleagues got $100 gift certificates, and one teacher even got an MP3 player!
Lesson learned: I can be bought!
(insert evil laugh here). :)

Jeju-do

I went to Jeju Island ("do" means island in Korean) last weekend! We had Monday off of school, so 6 of us from school hopped an hour-long flight to the sub-tropical island just south of Korea. This island has the highest peak in South Korea, Mt. Halla, which is a volcano (inactive). The island is the top holiday destination in Korea, and it's called "Korea's Hawaii".
We rented a car, but it was a bit of a problem since Thomas just got his Korean license. They didn't want to rent a car who had a Korean license for under a year (even though he's had his Canadian license for 10 years!) After a lot of hopping around from one car rental place to another, we finally got one and drove to our condo. The place we stayed was a pension (or timeshare) on the top of some hills. It overlooked the ocean and beautiful mountains. We didn't even pay anything to stay there since it was owned by a friend of Angie. It was Korean-style, meaning it only had one bed and mats for the floor (fine by me!).
Even though the weather wasn't exactly hot (in the 70's all weekend), it was still really nice. We went to the beach and the guys went for a swim in the ocean (crazy) while Kristen, Angie and I laid in the sun. The second day we went to a different beach, which had a really low tide, making it the biggest beach I've ever seen. There were lots of little shallow pools of warm water in the sand where we found a ton of hermit crabs. We stayed at that beach for a long time, playing around in the sand and just lying there. Again, the guys swam in the cold ocean, while I was wearing cropped pants and a t-shirt. And sure enough, I was thrown into the water fully clothed. Actually, I didn't put up much of a fight. It was hilarious.
In addition to going to the beach, during the days we saw some waterfalls, toured some caves and botanical gardens. There At night we played badminton and drinking games and sat out side. It was soooo nice. All in all, I had a fantastic weekend.

Too busy living to write

Ahhh! I have SO much to write about, but I haven't had any time lately!! My friend Heidi was in town for the past week, and she just left Wednesday. We had a BLAST! We did sooo much stuff, and I'm confident to say she fully experienced Seoul. It was Buddah's Birthday on May 5, so there were tons of festivities for that. Parades that made me think "I am totally in Asia". Big fiery dragons and such.
We experienced a public bath (jimjilbang). Everyone is naked and relaxing in pools of all kinds. Totally "Garden of Eden" experience (although there were no apples involved). We got a naked exfoliating scrub-down and oil massage while we were there....what an experience. It was great, and only $25. I am soooo proud of Heidi because even though we lived together for 7 years, this is the first time I've seen her naked. (and btw.... Matt, you are one lucky guy! ) ;) Don't worry, they separate the women and men (.......damn)
Of course we went to noraebang (singing room) and also DVD bang (DVD room) AND gamebang (game room). It was a weekend of BANGS! Heidi, I had a great time!

This weekend I'm flying to Jeju Island, the Hawaii of Korea with some work friends. I've got a 3 day weekend.....yay....I know I'll have a great time there too....
If I didn't have to work, I'd totally have time to keep this blog updated. Why does work always get in the way of my social life????

P.S. Check out www.rachaelyamagata.com. You can listen to her songs. I just love love love.
